Hawk Nelson sound kind of like what MxPx might sound like if you took them, dipped them in a cotton candy machine, poured sugar on them, and then dipped the resulting concoction in another cotton candy machine. As ridiculously sweet as they are, I have to admit, they aren't bad. It's like pop-punk for toddlers.
But, that's not how the album's meant to be listened to. Hawk Nelson are billed as a Christian Pop-Punk band and, frankly, I possess a certain willful ignorance of that particular genre. I can assume that if I were into the genre, I'd be all about this band and this album. As it is, I have the bare minimum of exposure and interest in this type of music.
Considering all of that, I'm going to go ahead and look at Hawk Nelson is My Friend from a purely technical standpoint. From that view, the album is merely safe. The production is slick, the hooks are catchy, and it's everything you'd expect it to be. I would assume that this could be considered their opus, but having no prior exposure to the band, I can't say for sure. What I can say, is that this album is certainly not going to win everyone over to the flock.
Hawk Nelson is My Friend is probably some of the most listenable Christian Pop-Punk around, but that's not really saying much in this album's favor. If you like the genre or the band, you'll probably enjoy it. Otherwise, there's really nothing here for you.
