First off let me say that country music is not one of the styles of music I am too fond of. Rockabilly and Psychobilly are about as close as I usually come to country, but this album by Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles was possibly one of the best country/pure rockabilly albums I have ever heard. No redundant and forced patriotism, no "don't mess with Texas" attitude, just pure songs about everyday occurrences in life; it's an album anyone can listen to and have a feeling of understanding.
The thing that got me was that it didn't feel like just another country album. There is a mix of soul, rock, and a little punk attitude that help to really shape the record from start to finish. Besides being a great listen and having a good amount of catchy songs, Sarah refuses to write songs from just one perspective. Men and women, country fans and punk fans can all find common ground with this album; it's not country rock or anything like that, just good old rock and roll with a country influence.
Overall, the album has a good feel all the way through and there isn't really any "bad" song or song you would skip over after hearing the album once. Like I said, it still is basically a country album, but the added and apparent influences are what set it apart and make it a very worthwhile record. Let's put it this way - it's one of the few times I've heard acoustic guitars and not thought "emo" right off the bat. It really is more like a punk rock girl playing the music of her country roots. This album is just a good one to add to anyone's collection for those moments when you just need to relax and have some rock and roll ringing in your ears.
