The intro of this record is like a trailer for a good movie, pulling you in with just a tease. The horns are a way for people to get intrigued before Shark Speed slow things down and get to the point of things. “Cast Off Dance Off” is without a doubt, one of the more interesting songs I’ve heard in a while from a band that’s not on the radio, but they damn sure should be. The horns reappear and everything just clicks really well. Overall, this band is absolutely amazing. For example, “Freddy” sounds a lot like The Killers before they became all glammy and shitty.
While every song doesn’t work as well as others, particularly “Battle Born,” which relies a bit too heavily on the horns and “Seagulls” where the band sound way too soft for their own good, they seem to be trying too many different things at once which makes for more of a collision of sound than anything else. The musical reminisces on “And You are in the Band?” are really interesting but that’s the most memorable thing about the song.
Another great standout, “Deep South Detox” is just catchy as all hell and listening to them, one begins to wonder why they aren’t on the radio. The little detour of the title track is unnecessary because it doesn’t do anything for the rest of the record at all.
Overall, this is one of the most exciting bands of the last year and while every song isn’t exactly a winner, the ones that are, are absolutely stellar and amazing. “Deep South Detox” and “Cast Off Dance Off” will indelibly be lodged in your mind where they won’t be able to escape. A great band and maybe next time, they’ll deliver a mind-fuck of a record.
