Charming rockers, Reuben's Accomplice put a smile on my face with their honesty and sentiment on "The Bull, The Balloon and The Family." Though this isn't their first release, and it isn't the first one I've heard, but it certainly is the best. It wasn't original, it wasn't groundbreaking, it wasn't some mastered work of art. It was an album made by some boys who love making music and find their happiness doing it. It reminds me of the days of playground love, pure fun and youthful bliss that for me has been lost and jaded over the years. Its simplicity is what makes it genuine and fun. Reuben's Accomplice came out with a release called "I am The Scenery" in 2001, which to say the least was an immature piece of bubblegum pop that just wasn't worth the time of day. This release has matured lyrically and musically, but it's still that same style that Reuben's Accomplice have claimed to be their own. Lyrically, this album is high school with lyrics like "We would go to the park just hanging out/talk about things that didn't matter a lot..." and "We can gig all night and we can jam on riffs that no one claimed..." Okay, so it's not lyrical brilliance, but the songs are something that at that age, we all could have related to. One song in particular that struck me as cute was "Underneath the Golden Grain." It's written by the singer about the other members of the band, and how thankful he is to have them and be in a band with them. It was sweet because it showed how close these people really are and how much bliss music brings them. The music is calming and fun to listen to. I'd compare it to Jimmy Eat World at times, with a little New Amsterdams thrown into the mix. They're not punk rock or hardcore or metal, they're emo rock. So if you like emo rock and you're in highschool and you just want something simple and easy to listen to without all the slit your wrists emotions, then check out this group because their music is "cute" in every sense of the word. For all you hardcore and punk fans, definately skip this one over and call it a day. Three stars.
