Over their history, Relient K have remained extremely methodical and true in their musical approach, and Mmhmm is certainly no exception to the rule. After five years of listening to these guys, they’ve never failed to impress. Sure, it’s Christian pop punk, but every song is either catchy as hell, or simply heavenly (excuse my poor puns). I’m instantly tapping my foot as “The One I’m Waiting For” takes off at break-neck speed.“Be My Escape” slows things down just a little and is probably the perfect example of a Relient K track – a mixture of soft piano and rhythm guitar. Matt Thiessen’s vocals are charming and slick at the same time. I really enjoy the way his smooth yet strong voice compliments the lighthearted style of Relient K’s music.
There is a slightly heavier edge to the next couple of tracks before sliding back into their comfort zone, which definitely isn’t a bad thing. I notice my foot is still tapping – my God this is addictive (another pun, I’m on a roll!).
The tracks on Mmhmm are assembled quite intelligently – interspersing the classic pop punk tracks with piano-driven numbers, and closing out with a beautiful acoustic epic. The standouts for me are “Be My Escape”, “More Than Useless”, “Which To Bury, Us Or The Hatchet?” and “Maintain Consciousness” for their willingness to break out of the typical Relient K mold.
Whilst maintaining their trademark style, Relient K have managed to build upon all their prior musicianship and songwriting prowess to create a technically impeccable record that all power pop/pop punk lovers can truly enjoy.
