Taking influences from Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, and a little bit of Cat Power, its obvious Kissing Cousins have the right mixture of dark, sad, slow, beautiful writing capabilities as their now legendary predecessors. This debut E.P. shows good things to come for the new band, four tracks roughly 13 minutes in length takes you into the dark woods and leaves you there to feel sorry for yourself. Two tracks I'd like to highlight are "Sleep Little Angel" and "White Room". "Sleep Little Angel" is a warm lullaby that makes you feel safe and at ease with your surroundings, and best yet it has a lovely flute track in it. "White Room" is an indie rock masterpiece. Everything is just where it should be, it's hard to explain, but I could easily see myself dying to this song.
The only grievance I had with this E.P., with the exception of "White Room", is in all the songs vocal tracks it has this annoying background hiss that makes it obvious of the recording process, and does not have a natural blend. If the natural blend was there, I would have easily given it another star, but production quality should always be a huge concern to any recording artists. The future looks bright for Kissing Cousins and I can see them doing well with their unique blend of dark tortured vocals, and lo fi sound. I just hope the quality of the recording is a little more polished on their debut full length that I am now waiting impatiently for.-
